Rent a car

For the following destinations on the mainland and the Greek islands we already have area overviews of the different providers:

By the way: As a refueling rule is always “as taken, so back” with all my partners throughout Greece.

Things to know about “Driving in Greece

Exactly like with us, is in Greece right-hand traffic. Thanks to the membership of Greece, almost all traffic signs are exactly the same as those on the roads in our more northern climes. In general, if you can drive safely through a large town in Western Europe, you will not have any major problems with your rental car.

A few – partly even very pleasant – differences exist, of course, nevertheless
In my experience, Greek drivers prefer to drive by feel rather than by traffic rules and signs. Therefore he drives z.B. on the wide national roads usually as far to the right as possible to allow overtaking maneuvers in both directions and thus on a 2 lane road can also be driven sometimes three and four lanes … And he also takes sometimes the foot off the gas to allow at junctions and bottlenecks also unprompted a zipper system.

After a short period of acclimatization, you as a driver of a rental car will certainly find this mutual consideration very pleasant. For me personally, this leads after every vacation with a rental car in Greece to the fact that I regularly maneuver myself into dicey situations in the first days after my return, because I simply forget that most people here only think of themselves (“and after me the flood of sense”).

The main cause of traffic accidents with rental cars in Greece is said to be that their drivers stubbornly insist on their right of way. However, accidents with rental cars seem to be very rare in Greece: I do not know statistics about it. However, since 96/97 I have certainly arranged hundreds of rental cars all over Greece, of which only one has ever been involved in an accident (knock on wood).

Unless otherwise signposted, the following maximum speeds are permitted in Hellas (as of 2012):
50 km/h within built-up areas
130 km/h on highways

In recent years, both on the mainland, as well as on the Greek islands in terms of road safety has done a lot:
Since the police are increasingly carrying out speed and alcohol checks and rigorously monitoring compliance with the helmet requirement for motorcycles and scooters introduced a few years ago, the number of serious traffic accidents has dropped significantly.
Speed checks in Greece are done with a handheld laser, as you know it from American movies. Fines are very high and have to be paid immediately, otherwise the vehicle will be impounded.

Excerpt from the Greek catalog of fines (as of 2008) for speeding:

– up to 20 km/h too fast 40,- Euro
– more than 20 km/h too fast 100,- Euro
– more than 30 km/h too fast 350,- Euro + 2 months driving ban
Drinking and driving:
Between 0,5 and 0,8 200,- Euro
Between 0,8 and 1,1 700,- Euro + 3 months driving ban
Over 1,1 1.200,- Euro + 6 months driving ban
Driving without helmet or seat belt 350,- Euro
Overtaking despite overtaking ban 700,- Euro
Disregard a red light 700, – euros
Wrong parking 80,- to 15,- Euro
Phone calls while driving 100,- Euro

It is worth mentioning that there is a rule that only half of the fine is due if the fine is paid within 10 calendar days. Just whether you can rely on it?

Car insurance in Greece

A “fully comprehensive insurance” in the form of the letter of exemption for all damages, which we are familiar with, does not generally exist in Greece. Even if you would take out all additional insurances, there will always be one or two special cases that are not insurable. (Z.B.self-caused damages in the interior of the vehicle are never insured.)
Therefore, when looking for cheap car rental you will often – but definitely not here at Greece trip – stumble over various abbreviations, the sense of which is usually difficult to understand. The following are the most common:

TPL “Third Party Liability -> Liability insurance

The legal liability insurance in Greece only covers property damage up to 100.000,- Euro, personal injuries up to 500.000,- Euro from. You can extend these coverage limits z.B. by taking out a “Mallorca-Police” of the ADAC.

CDW“Collision Damage Waiver -> Accident insurance

Applies to damage caused to your car. With this form of the Greek “comprehensive insurance” you should absolutely note, however, that glass, tires and underbody – often not even theft or fire are insured in it almost never!

FDW “Full Damage Waiver -> Exclusion of the deductible

This is the famous additional insurance to the accident insurance that many providers almost force you to take out when you take over your car.

PAI “Personal Accident Insurance”> Passenger protection insurance

In the classic passenger protection insurance, the damages of your fellow passengers are insured, which are caused in an accident caused by you as the driver. However, you yourself as the driver are not covered by this insurance.

TF “Theft& Fire” Theft& Fire insurance

This almost creates a classic “fully comprehensive insurance”.

WUG “Wheels Tyres, Under Side& Glass protect” Tire, underbody& Glass breakage insuranceApplies only on official roads (definition: an official road always has traffic signs).). So if you were to tear your undercarriage on some donkey trails in the mountains, even the “tires& Underbody insurance” does not help.
