import and registration of a vehicle when moving to germany

Relocation Plus: Import of car, classic car or motorcycle with TuV and registration

This service is for new citizens in Germany who want to bring, insure and register their car as part of an international move and do not have sufficient language skills.

Importing an import car or other motor vehicle when sending it from abroad to Germany is sometimes an adventure. How complicated car importation becomes depends on several factors: Age, country of origin (production, first and last registration), technical condition and value. Within the European Union there is no import tax or customs duty for car import when importing a used car. The EU import is therefore at least in this respect easier and cheaper.

If a motor vehicle is imported into Germany from a non-EU country, 10% customs duty and 19% import sales tax are usually payable. However, under certain conditions, the import car can be recognized as a relocation good. Then there is no need for customs for the import of the car.

One can observe with imports from non-EU countries that the manufacturers do not or only reluctantly support the owners of such vehicles. So if you want to import your car to Germany, you should check before (!) make sure that an authorized workshop assists with conversion, homologation and registration. Otherwise it can become very inconvenient and expensive. In Bremerhaven, where most cars from overseas arrive, there are specialized companies for homologation. These companies take care of everything and then deliver the vehicle to the new place of residence. For these and other reasons, you should consider very carefully whether it is economically worthwhile to import a car.

And when looking for an apartment, check whether and at what cost a car can be parked in the vicinity or in the house at all.

This relocation service can and should be booked early before the start of the import car. The Service List shows why:

Car Relocation Germany – we do it for you, before the car import became a nightmare

ANDERS CONSULTING Relocation Service supports newcomers in Germany who bring their car or motorcycle with them in the necessary steps for registration, also with coordination of the necessary conversions and individual inspection

“If an EU import car could speak, it would be afraid when importing a car to Germany. And before what? Of course, before the TuV. The is considered the strictest technical inspection for vehicles in Europe. So what to do if you have to take your beloved car with you??

Whether on your own four wheels or by ship from overseas, whether from the EU or from third countries: No vehicle can be registered in Germany without the blessing of the TuV (Technischer uberwachungsverein) or another testing organization. Only very few, special test seals from the EU foreign countries are recognized and then also only for the periods, for which they were issued.

Whether, in addition to the main inspection (HU) and the exhaust emission test (AU), conversions and a full expert opinion are required depends on the age and origin of the vehicle, even for an EU car.

Before importing a car, it is worthwhile to check whether it makes economic sense to import the car in view of the transport, repair and conversion costs. Older foreign vehicles rarely pass the MOT at the first attempt and then have to be repaired. For mopeds and small scooters: Without a Certificate of Conformity (COC), the registration in Germany is economic nonsense, or. practically impossible.

If you want to save yourself the technical hassle and a lot of bureaucracy, hire us. If your car has belonged to you for a long time, we will also ensure that no customs duty is charged on the car import when it is imported from outside the EU. Keyword: Moving property. 11 Tips around the import car and the registration

1. It is almost always worthwhile to take the imported car to an authorized workshop during the registration process in Germany, which also carries out the main inspection and MOT. Then the work for obtaining the coveted sticker can be done in-house

2. In Germany, vehicle taxes are levied, which are collected by direct debit. The authorities require as proof of account a German EC card, which is not available without an account

3. Transfer trips with an EU car within the Union are best carried out with the current registration. So you can still move the car if the registration in the host country does not work out immediately

4. With vehicles from Southern and Eastern Europe, which are older than 5 years, one should assume with the import car and the registration as a precaution of a certain repair need, in order to pass HU / AU

5. Before importing a car, it should be checked whether a certificate of conformity (COC) belongs to the vehicle and is available. Otherwise request this from the dealer / manufacturer early

6. Although the inspectors have data sheets for most older vehicles of common makes, a full certificate (“Baurat”) is always necessary without a COC

7. Vehicles for the US market or from Japan require modifications, e.g.B. Tires, turn signals, speedometer, headlights, blinker lights, etc.

8. When importing from non-EU countries, the vehicle is subject to customs for the import of cars. The declaration and clearance should be done by a freight forwarder or import company and transmit the declaration electronically using ATLAS. The stamped clearance certificate is required for registration

9. For the amount of customs duty on car imports i.d.R. the purchase price deducted. For vehicles that have been owned for a long time, a current value, for example the Schwacke value must be given

10. Customs duty on passenger cars: 10% of the total value of the vehicle + transport costs, customs duty on motorcycles: 8% of the total value of the vehicle + transport costs. Import sales tax: 19% on total value of the vehicle + transport costs + customs duty. There are exceptions for oldtimers and relocation goods!

11. Anyone importing a privately used car from outside the EU that they have owned for a long time and for which they can provide proof of registration can avoid customs by applying for the vehicle to be recognized as household effects
