Refuel autogas! How and why?



Gasoline and diesel have long since ceased to be the only alternatives for getting the engine going. Autogas is also on the rise in this country, although the use of the fuel has not yet reached the spread in other countries. If you’re driving a rigged vehicle right after you get your license, you need to fill up on gas. If you are currently researching the purchase of a vehicle, the purchase of an LPG vehicle is worth considering.

How to refuel autogas?

Gas refueling is not yet widespread in Germany. As a result, some motorists are wary of the unknown fuel supply. Last but not least, this is often related to a false association: Spontaneously, people think of an airy substance escaping from the gas tap. Of course, this is far from reality, because it is a liquid fuel. Accordingly, the energy enters the tank in a similar way as you know it from gasoline or diesel.

At the autogas filling station you will find a hose with a tap similar to the common classics. Differently, behind the tank cap an adapter with thread and seals is hidden. Before the refueling process can start, the gas adapter on the car is firmly connected to the tap by turning it. As many people are afraid of escaping gas, this operation is often taken too seriously. It is not necessary to turn the whole thing so tight as if it were an eternal connection. If you use your normal power without effort, it is quite enough.

First fix, then start!

Once the tap is firmly connected to the tank, you are ready to go. This is what the start button on the gas pump is for. However, a single squeeze is not enough. While refueling autogas, you must keep it pressed down. There is a simple reason for this: it is a safety switch, which you also know from dangerous devices such as chainsaws: When the button is released, the entire machinery stops immediately. At this moment, the process is interrupted, so no gas flows into the tank. When you have done this a few times, you realize that using your whole hand is a good way to avoid interruptions.

As usual, you can see how many liters of the fuel are going into the gas tank by the display. By the behavior of the informative counter you can also determine when your supply volume is exhausted. If progress is very slow, refueling is complete. Do not be irritated by this: Autogas tanks by themselves always have a larger volume than they can hold. At around 80 percent, it is usually the end of the road. Only newer models make almost complete use of the available space.

Gloves prove their worth with LPG!

Finally you have to loosen the tap from the adapter by turning it again. At this point at the latest, it is an advantage if no force was used when attaching the tank. Do not be alarmed if some gas escapes. This is as normal as the cold you feel when refueling with LPG. For the transfer in liquid form the fuel is cooled down enormously.

So it is by no means something for warmists and chicks to wear gloves with leather surface when refueling with gas. Both the cold and the turning action speak practically for the accessories.

The network of filling stations for LPG is still rather coarse-meshed in some German regions. That’s why it’s important to keep an eye on your supplies. In addition, gas systems for cars are bivalent in this country. This means that you can switch to the use of gasoline. A few liters of the classic gasoline in the tank is a good idea for long-distance trips. This allows you to search for a suitable refueling station at your leisure when gas is in short supply.

What is at stake: Advantages of autogas

LPG has various advantages. The first advantage is obvious when comparing fuel prices, because gas is significantly cheaper than gasoline or diesel. Among other things, this has to do with the federal political promotion of alternative fuels. LPG is also ahead in environmental terms. For example, the exhaust gas emission is considerably lower than is the case with the classic variants. In Germany, buying a suitable car or converting a vehicle still seems innovative. The principle has been proven for decades. In many countries of the world refueling with LPG, as the fuel is abbreviated, is a common standard on the roads. In some regions, the number of LPG vehicles exceeds that of gasoline or diesel engines. Not least the high price advantage with the steady maintenance of the car convinces to this decision. Accordingly, it is not surprising that you will find a gas pump at every filling station in these countries. This is not yet the case in Germany. In most cases, these are separate filling stations. Gas companies also offer vehicle refueling as an additional service.

Of course, there are also disadvantages, which concern, for example, the space required for the tank and the limited distribution of autogas filling stations. Inform yourself before a purchase decision comprehensively about the pros and cons in the matter of gas.

Of course, car manufacturers have also adapted to the worldwide demand. That’s why there are now more than 90 alternatives if you’re considering a new car that’s ready for autogas.

Do not confuse LPG and CNG!

Do not confuse LPG with CNG. Despite the similar names, these are two different systems. The tank tips have already revealed that LPG is refueled and stocked in liquid form. You may casually draw parallels to the propane gas bottle when camping. CNG is mainly methane that is actually stored in gaseous form. Newer biogases are also used for this purpose. It is logical that the refueling of natural gas vehicles is also different.
