What AdBlue® is for?
AdBlue® was developed for diesel vehicles equipped with an SCR catalytic converter. The majority of the latest diesel vehicles are equipped with an SCR system, which is AdBlue® used.
What is l’AdBlue®?
AdBlue® is neither a fuel nor an additive. It is an aqueous solution consisting of 67.5 percent demineralized water and 32.5 percent highly purified urea solution. According to ISO 22241, AdBlue® is a biodegradable product that is harmless to the environment and soluble in water.
SCR technology explained in brief
The selective catalytic reduction (SCR) process, for which AdBlue® is used, can reduce emissions of Diesel vehicles be reduced. With AdBlue® and the SCR process, nitrogen oxides (NOx) can be converted to nitrogen and water vapor.
The conversion takes place in 3 steps:
- AdBlue® is delivered from a separate tank into the exhaust line, upstream of the SCR catalytic converter
- heat converts the urea into ammonia
- the nitrogen oxides react with the ammonia to form nitrogen and water
Which car brands use AdBlue®??
Peugeot, Citroen, Renault, Opel, Mercedes, Volkswagen, BMW, Audi: Which models use AdBlue®??
The brand with the lion offers many models that use AdBlue®. These are vehicles with a 1.6-liter BlueHDi or a 2.0-liter BlueHDi engine. The Peugeot models concerned are thus: 208, 308, 508, 2008, 3008, 5008, Partner, Traveller, Expert and Boxer.
If you own one of these vehicles, you can buy AdBlue® at the gas station either in canisters or fill up at the pump (if there is an AdBlue® pump). Depending on the Peugeot brand model, the flap to the AdBlue® tank can be located in two places: in the trunk or behind the diesel fuel filler flap, next to the diesel tank.
Many models of the Citroen brand also use SCR technology and AdBlue ®, including Citroen Berlingo, C3, C4, Grand-C4-Picasso, C5, Jumpy, Jumper, as well as Spacetourer.
On all SCR-equipped models of the brand with the double angle, the AdBlue® filler neck is located next to the diesel filler neck. Citroen equips its vehicles with a considerable AdBlue® tank, which holds an average of 17 liters.
Renault as another French manufacturer offers SCR technology on its latest models, including Renault Alaskan, Captur, Clio, Espace, Kadjar, Kangoo, Koleos, Master, Megane, Scenic as well as Talisman and Trafic. Depending on your Renault model, the opening to the AdBlue® tank is located next to the diesel filler neck, in the trunk or under the hood.
Opel has integrated the SCR process in 2017. Models using this include the Opel Astra, Cascada, Grandland, Crossland, Insignia, Movano, Vivaro and Zafira. On all Opel models, the AdBlue® filler cap is located next to the diesel filler cap.
Mercedes also offers many models with AdBlue®. Particularly noteworthy are those equipped with BlueTEC technology, such as the ML 250 BlueTEC, the R350 BlueTEC or even the E200 BlueTEC. The diesel models of the A-Class, B-Class, C-Class and CLA also feature SCR technology. On Mercedes vehicles, the filler neck for AdBlue® is usually located next to the diesel filler neck.
All new diesel vehicles from Volkswagen are equipped with SCR technology. So AdBlue® is used by the Volkswagen models Golf, Amarok, Polo, Passat, Tiguan, T-Roc and Touran. The AdBlue® tank holds between 11 and 19 liters depending on the model. The fuel filler neck is located next to the diesel filler neck, under the hood or in the trunk.
BMW has been offering diesel models with SCR technology since 2017, from the 1-series to the 7-series. The BMW X series is also available with selective catalytic reduction technology, from the X1 to the X7. Depending on the model, the tank holds between 12 and 15 liters of AdBlue®. The tank is filled through the opening located next to the diesel tank or in the engine compartment.
Audi has also integrated SCR technology in its new diesel models. AdBlue® is thus used by the A3, A4, A5, A6, A7 and A8 models. The same applies to the Q models Q2, Q3, Q5, Q7 and Q8: they also use selective catalytic reduction technology. Depending on the Audi model, the AdBlue® tank holds between 12 and 24 liters. The filler neck is located next to the diesel filler neck.
