10 Famous cars from europe as long versions for china

10 Long Wheelbase Cars from Europe for China

The Audi A6L was unveiled at the Guangzhou Auto Show in 2018 and is Audi’s answer to the “stretched” car BMW 5 Series, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class and the Jaguar XF.

With a wheelbase of 3.024 millimeters (compared with 2.924 of the conventional model) it is supposed to offer a livability more typical of an A8.

First with a 2.0 turbocharged gasoline engine with 190 or 224 hp, the plug-in hybrid version TFSI e was added to the lineup shortly afterwards.

With more space to make occupants more comfortable, Audi launched the Q5L in 2018. A model which, incidentally, has already been followed by the Q5L Sportback for the Chinese market.

Essentially, both have an 8.8-centimeter longer wheelbase, so rear-seat occupants enjoy 11 centimeters more legroom.

Mechanically, the 2.0 TFSI four-cylinder engines with 190 and 252 hp to be used. Always standard are all-wheel drive and the seven-speed S tronic dual-clutch transmission.

BMW 3 Series with long wheelbase

Unveiled at the 2019 Shanghai Motor Show, at first glance it might look like we’re looking at a regular BMW 3 Series. But here we see the long-wheelbase version.

Its large rear doors, however, hint at the change: a wheelbase of 2.961 millimeters (11 additional centimeters), which allows to offer 43 millimeters more legroom in the rear seats.

Even one of Europe’s most popular premium sedans, the 5 Series, couldn’t escape the lengthening trend in China.

When it was unveiled at Auto China 2020, a wheelbase extended by 130 millimeters was announced, giving a total wheelbase of 3.105 millimeters achieved.

The stretched 5 Series is assembled in a local-market plant, has model-specific options such as rear comfort seats and, in the case of the 535Le, is also offered as a plug-in hybrid version.

Jaguar XEL

Jaguar XEL

At the Guangzhou Motor Show 2017 was revealed this very special Jaguar XE with 200 hp and 250 hp gasoline engines.

But it wasn’t the content under the hood that mattered, but in the cabin, where there was more leg and knee room.

The secret? A 100 millimeter longer wheelbase of 2.935 millimeters, which is equivalent to that of a significantly larger model such as the XF.

Mercedes-AMG A 35 L

In China, it should come as no surprise that Mercedes-Benz is selling a long-wheelbase A-Class sedan. But what is striking is that they also do it there in a sporty AMG variant.

We’re talking about the 2019 Mercedes-AMG A 35 L 4MATIC, which delivers 6 extra centimeters of wheelbase to give its occupants more interior space.

Nevertheless, thanks to 306 hp, all-wheel drive and seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, it reaches a top speed of 250 km/h (governed) and acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.9 seconds.

Mercedes-Benz C-Class L

Mercedes-Benz C-Class L

Once upon a time, a Mercedes C-Class wanted to be an E-Class.

Joking aside: the long version of the C-Class sold in China hardly differs from the “European” one, at least in terms of design Model.

Because when we take out the tape measure, things change: the long C reaches 4.88 meters, compared to the 4.75 meters of the original model, while the wheelbase is 2.95 meters (9.8 centimeters more). It retains the same width and height, and curiously, you can still get the classic grille with a star on the hood in China.

Mercedes-Benz GLC L

In response to the Audi Q5L, Mercedes-Benz has launched the GLC L early in China.

To meet the needs of users in this market, it measures 4.76 meters instead of the European GLC’s 4.66 meters and gains 10 centimeters in wheelbase.

And this in a series consisting of the 200 4MATIC (184 hp), 250 4MATIC (211 hp) and 300 4MATIC (245 hp) versions.

Peugeot 508L

Peugeot 508L

The current Peugeot 508 has always struck us as a very elegant, attractive and well-proportioned model. That is why we are particularly surprised by this growth in length.

Because the 508L increases its wheelbase by 55 millimeters (2.85 meters) and its length by 100 millimeters (4.86 meters in total).

Things get weird at the rear, though, where the tailgate of the European model gives way to the trunk lid typical of classic notchback sedans. By the way, the long 508 is also the basis for the DS 9.

Skoda Octavia Pro

Do you think a Skoda Octavia could be even bigger and more comfortable? If so, and you live in Europe, you would probably buy a Superb.

However, the Czech company sells in China the Octavia Pro, which basically undergoes a significant growth and some minor changes, such as longer rear doors, sporty bumpers .

If we talk about dimensions, the Pro is 4.75 meters long, 64 millimeters longer than the European representative. With the wheelbase at 2.73 meters, an extra 44 millimeters comes into play.

In a global world like the one we live in, it should come as no surprise that an automaker would target a specific type of version of a model to a specific region of the world.

However, if this specific variant has only one major change, such as a longer wheelbase, and if this car is sold in only one market, things start to get weird.

Because it’s true, there are some European luxury brands that have traditionally always offered some model with a longer wheelbase (LWB or Long Wheelbase) in Europe. But just only with the Mercedes S-Class or, say, Rolls-Royce. In some cases there is even more wheelbase, which is called EWB (Extended Wheelbase) or Pullman.

However, the cars that get an extension in China are not particularly luxurious – at least not in our eyes. We are talking about sedans or SUVs, which belong to the middle class in every European country (even within the premium brands).

So what happens in China? There, people not only appreciate the comfort and space, especially in the rear, which occasionally becomes a mobile office. Popular brands such as Audi offer several of their model ranges as long-wheelbase versions, such as the A7L, which has now surprised us at Auto Shanghai 2021.

The reason is simple: In the power hierarchies of companies or the state leadership, close attention is paid to who drives which model series. Middle management had better not get the idea of driving S-Classes. Ergo, Mercedes offers there all sedans from the A-class also extended.

If you want to know some of the most curious examples based on models sold in Europe, don’t miss the selection we have prepared for you.
