MediaTek has introduced two new system-on-chip (SOC) for coming 5G smartphones with Dimensity 1100 and Dimensity 1200. These chips are made for the first time for the dimensity series in 6-nanometer technology. That lowers your power consumption. So far, Dimensity-SOC come from the 7-NM production.
New CPU cores with old graphic unit
Both new mobile phone chips use the currently most powerful arm Cortex-A78 processor cores, but in different forms. The Dimensity 1200 uses a 1-3-4 architecture with four energy-efficient Cortex A55 cores, three Cortex A78 cores with up to 2.6 GHz and another A78 core for a maximum of 3.0 GHz and twice as coarse cache. According to the manufacturer, the Dimensity 1200 is intended to offer one up to 22 percent higher CPU performance at the same time 25 percent better energy efficiency than the previous generation.
The Dimensity 1100, on the other hand, uses the spread 4 + 4-architecture with four energy-efficient Cortex A55 cores and four Cortex A78 high-end cores. MediaTek has exchanged only the Cortex A77 against the new A78 compared to the direct transaction, the Dimensity 1000 SOC,.
Interestingly, MediaTek takes over the integrated graphics unit MALI G77 in both new SOC instead of using the new Mali G78. The Mali-G78 graphic unit presented in May last year is expected to bring 15 percent more 3D performance per square millimeter Chipflache than the previous Mali G77.
Both new chips replacement continues to support LPDDR4x main memory with capacities of up to 16 GB. Although LPDDR5 is already available and is also supported by high-end chips such as the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888, but LPDDR4 building blocks are cost-effective and little slower.
More megapixels, Chinese mobile phones in preparation
The dimensity 1200 chip allows image recordings of up to 200 megapixels, while the dimensity 1100 is limited to 108 megapixels with only one camera. This is an upgrade to the transaction Dimensity 1000, which provides 80 megapixels. In dual camera configuration it remains at a maximum of 32 plus 16 megapixels. In addition, both new SOC support images with optimization by artificial intelligence, for example for panoramic images at night and for bokeh effects with blurred background.
Both Dimensity 1200 and Dimensity 1100 can control smartphone displays with up to 2520×1080 pixels. Dimensity 1200 allows for refresh frequencies of a maximum of 168 Hz and the dimensity 1100 it is up to 144 Hz. Manufacturers such as Chinese companies Xiaomi, Vivo, Oppo and Realme have already been interested in Dimensity 1200 and Dimensity 1100, according to MediaTek. The first smartphones with the new SOC should come to the market in Marz or April.
