With the switch to version 6 of the Application Frameworks QT, which is used for the platform development of user interface development, the KAOS developers prepare their distribution for a change of the plasma desktop to the QT-6 basis. A number of applications in Kaos are already based on QT 6. For the first time with on board, Stacer, a graphical tool for managing systemD services as well as isowriter as Kaos’s own start media manufacturer.
The independent Linux distribution Kaos uses updates to continuously available after the Rolling Release model. New packages are recorded with the Arch-Linux package manager Pacman. However, the developers reduce Snapshots in the form of ISO files in regular cases, to facilitate new entrants the installation.
Qt 6 and new applications
On the Kaos website, the project gives overlooking the innovations. The current Kaos snapshot contains initial applications based on the Framework QT 6, for example, the music player Strawberry, which is masked by Clementine, and the Synthesizer Qsynth. In addition, the constituents of the PYQT stack, such as SIP 6, PYQT builders and PYQT 6.0.0 on the new framework. The packages of the plasma desktops plasma 5.20.5, Frameworks 5.78.0 and the KDE Application Suite 5.15.2 are all based on QT 5.15.2. Kaos 2021.01 comes with Linux kernel 5.10.6.
The new Kaos 2021.01 has some new applications in the luggage, such as the matrix client Neochat or the Barrier program, which allows you to control multiple systems in the network with mouse and keyboard. Kaos uses SystemD boat as a bootloader for UEFI installations. Stacer Lost SystemD-KCM as a tool for graphical management of systemD services and also acts as a system monitor.
Stacer serves as a system monitor and can manage systemD services and startup programs.
New tricks when installing the system
Kaos relies on the distribution probe Installer Calamares, whose partition module since version 3.2.35 "Split Encryption" controlled. The feature allows users to install Kaos the hard drive, / boat but unbalanced. The user module now offers a more detailed management of user groups.
The in-house starting medium isowriter can choose the partition data of a USB stick that has fulfilled its purpose as an installation medium. This should simplify the reformatting, which allows users to use the stick again to regular data transfer. On request, ISOWRITER calls the integer of the starting medium by comparing the tool the MD5 hashes of the ISO file and the written image. This verification can also be made via the context menu of the file manager Dolphin.
According to its own presentation on the project page, the Kaos project does not pursue the goal of providing a possible range of software and desktop environments. Instead, the developers lay the "Focus on a DE (KDE plasma), a toolkit (QT), an architecture (X86_64)".
In the installation manual, the developers advise you to use the starting media manufacturers Rufus and Unetbootin. In a short attempt, the ISO image under Linux would like to easily write via DD command or with the Tool Etcher on a USB stick. An installation of Kaos on system with RAID is currently not possible. Further innovations find interested parties in the release envision. Kaos 2021.01 is available as direct download on the project page.
