Are nomads cleverer as sedentary? At least in birds, something seems to be on this hypothesis, in evolutionary perspective sees itself. German ornithologists have taken a train bird to the magnifying glass and were fascinated by their thought. The relatives who prefer to stay at home, do not cut so well.

Zugbovel have always impressed world travelers and other restless. At some point early autumn, these cynahn of all nomads succumbed to their instincts and leave their homeland, just to settle ten thousand kilometers further for a few months, because life is more pleasant there. Whoever stays at home is to blame, seem to want to say the all-year blacks in the sky.

Only slowly, scientists begin to understand how migratory bird think. Not so long known is, for example, that many train birds do not even move in blackmoms of Dannen, but alone and then often at night. The coarse train to Suden is not a random social event, with the inexperienced bird just to fly those who "below" was. Stars and the magnetic field of the earth seem to play a weighty role in the orientation, but also a considerable thought, as the researcher Claudia Mettke-Hofmann has found out from the Max Planck Research Center for Ornithology now.

The idea horizon is limited to the suits

Mettke-Hoffmann has watched two close relatives among the birds for two years, which only 15 grams of heavy garden grassmucke, a migratory bird from our latitudes, and the velvet headgrassmucke, which is at home at home at home at home on the eastern Mediterranean. In the procedings of the American National Academy of Sciences, she reports on its experiments.

A total of 131 garden grassmints and velvet headgrassmucken were raised in captivity. When they grow up, they were allowed to explore a specially constructed enclosure on a day in autumn for eight and a half hours. It consisted of two rooms with different art vegetation and a series of feed shells. Only in a room, however, these feed shells were also filled. How not otherwise expected, this room was more popular.

The trick of the attempts was now a thought test that had to undergo different bird groups after four days, two weeks, a month and after half a year, after a three-year year and after one year. In turn, the bird was released in said enclosure, but this time only for twenty minutes. The feed shells were all removed, so there was nowhere to eat something.

Not only better thought, but also coarse brain

The result was clear: after four days and after two weeks, even bird of all groups remembered the briefly backwardness and popularly far from the room, in which they suspected the food again this time. After six, nine and twelve months, there were clear differences between the gardensmuck and the velvet headgrass. Only the first, scolded by evolution to migration, could still remember the right room. The others were looking for schannel.

As will be completed in the article, these observations fit to a neuroanatomic detriment of train vendors. Thus, their hippocampus is significantly gross than sedentary birds. This brain is attributed to this lying laterally in the sleeping area, important functions are attributed to the training of the long-term item. Makes more migration in the present therefore smarter people in the future? As always in science, this is not everything that easy…
