Electric cars: BMW orders lithium on other suppliers

BMW refers from 2022 lithium from a second supplier, the US company LIVENT. The multi-year contract includes a value of 285 million euros. Livent supplies the lithium directly to the battery cell manufacturers of the BMW Group to cover the demand rising due to the planned artificial electric car models of the Group.

Livent brings the lithium from the brine of salt lakes in the Lander triangle between Argentina, Bolivia and Chile. The salt lakes are about to hold the half of the global lithium deposits, sudden BMW . In the preparable degradation of lithium, the brine is pumped out of the earth and evaporated in flat basins. In the process applied by Livent, the coarse part of the sols used is returned directly to the surrounding habitat and not evaporated. Sustainable commodity extraction

At the end of 2018, BMW had closed a lithium delivery agreement with the Chinese company GANFENG with a lithium delivery agreement in the amount of 540 million euros. BMW wants to have brought about a dozen fully electric models on the strain from 2023. By 2025, the company wants to increase sales of fully electric models on average by more than 50 percent or more than tenfold against the year 2020. By the end of 2025, about two million fully electric vehicles should be delivered to customers by BMW.
