Split / Second
Two new games of Disney and Activision connect war and racing game
The tradition of the car game still wants to add something new to a lot of the future. There it is more likely to take a look over the edge of the genre and like Split / Second (Disney) and more Blur (Activision) warpiece elements on the strain.
So really new is not it not to introduce the war into the strain traffic, as well as every career driver wife. But even in the video game this crossover is known long ago: from Burnin ‘Rubber or Spy Hunter to Ride or the. However, the two new racing games are strategically offering their aggressive possibilities and embed them into a medial frame setting or implement them in an eSports Arena. That both games redefine the car route as a battle arena, not only illustrates the symbolic meaning of the competition, but reveals – at least in the case of "Split / Second" – once again the importance of the strain traffic for modern society and how through it the urban space ge – / deformed.
Disney’s "Split / Second" has been talking about a year ago, since the first gameplay videos had appeared on the E3. Behind a standardized racing game, where you can unlock new routes and vehicles in career mode, a veritable Terra-Forming concept hides: opposing vehicles can be overhauled in the convincing way and so try to go first through the goal. However, it is also possible to charge a power beam through certain driving manobs, such as dense driving, sprung or skilful drifting through curves, which then enables one to be enabled, small to rough catastrophes on the track in front of a. The aim is to destroy the opposing vehicles in this way: through the climbing of explosions, objects (from the iron carrier to the falling plane) to bring on the road and even to blow rock formations and buildings next to the slopes, which then crash on the way.
Split / Second
If you have bad luck, these actions not only catch the opponents, but also their own vehicle, which gives the action a bit the character of a suicide tat. Rough terrorist actions, for which you have to collect more energy before, the road can be deflected and made new ways. Especially such attacks are visually detailed by the game and counted in slow motion, to be able to estimate the sublime asthetics of a huge aircraft-tower minutios that falls on the road. However, "Split / Second" situates such asthetics – unlike, for example, Burnout Paradise – within a framework. Because we are the participants of a futuristic TV show with several billion spectators, just like in the movie Death Race (the remake of Paul Bartels "Death Race 2000"). The settings in which is driven were constructed specifically for the show. The bias of the game shows the work. All slow motion and image manipulation show what the TV viewer sees.
"The Traffic is Murder!"
"Blur" by Activision can not attract neither with such a frame action nor with a similar asthetics like "Split / Second". The arcade elements are much more clearly created as a computer game. The strong of the game is therefore also elsewhere – namely in the contest of several human player. Also "Blur" has career and multiplayer modes. The fact that the game did not want to be science fiction shows the selection of vehicles: "50 licensed cars" – the cover advertises. On several – as well as realistic stretches, which drove equally from oval racing arenes as by citys, one gives themselves as a driver with the vehicle most suitable for the terrain (which must, of course, be released before) either by speed an advantage, or through raw violence.
Because scattered on the road are eight different so-called "powerups", which equip the vehicle with attack, defense or escape techniques. Three such "powerups" can be collected at the same time and can be used combined against the opposing vehicles: For example, shockwaves that cancel through them canceled cars, mines that can be deposited, a nitro acceleration, protective shields, a repair tool and other. That these "powerups" float as graphic elements over the road, "Blur" – similarly as Disney’s Fuel – stronger in the arcade area as his competitor "Split / Second". And also the graphic implementation of these weapons takes the game to realism, which is intended to give him through the authentic vehicle types and the photorealistic graphic: twitching lightning, trimming prere waves (of which the game probably has his title) and similar graphic effects.
"You Finish First – Or Never!"
Both games have similar offline modes, including excreting races. For "SPLIT / SECOND" there is a "destruction mode" in which after expiration of a countdown the last driver flies by explosion of its vehicle from the race. As a similar way, you can also leave the opponents with weapon violence with "Blur" in a destruction mode alone. "Blur" offers a slightly elaborated career model, which must be acquired by the victories fans. A high fan status can also be achieved through the use of "powerups", so that the Acitivision title is basically based on a similar, just just imaginar spectator principle, such as "split / second": show your fans that you are above sheet metal Laying rides and will be soothed.
Both games contain similar online functionalities with rank lists and other racing games known online features. In their interactive offline modes, they differ more clearly: During "Split / Second" for two offline players, a two-part screen is available, can in "blur" equal up to four players compete against each other (with the corresponding small ads quadrant on the screen). In addition, the game allows to connect up to 20 ps3s to a LAN in which "Blur" can be played. Here, the crossover from racing game and ESPORT GAME (as with a number of shooters), unlike "Split / Second", is already very striking at the technical level, and "Blur" could preserve artificially as a serious platform for such contests.
Danger and danger
Surprisingly, it still warns that much irreeal and less on the human VS.-Human-game created "Split / Second" in his heading with that already known from Genre-representatives such as the "Need for Speed" series MOGE MOGE the driving behavior in the game but please do not make in real road traffic. Now "SPLIT / SECOND" rewards in contrast to "blur" risky driving behavior, how to get dense up or with highest speed in the curve on the brake, so that the vehicle hatchback breaks out, although directly. It is interesting, however, that this reward is reflected in the possibility, far more "dangerous interventions in the strain traffic": you get through you to the terrorist and Road Warrior. Here are potentially deadly surpasses on opponents not only tolerated, but required. The warning activities will hardly be related to that …
Split / Second
The Settings of "Split / Second" strikes the end of a level then more war scenarios as racing arenas. The well-foreseeable effect of a road falling on a road are gear and administration in war carrying strategies, the terrorist strategies are becoming increasingly similar. The car park will also survive for a race. "Stopping is almost like dying," has already named Roland Barthes in 1959 in his script to Hubert Aquins sports film "of Sports and Men" as a philosophy of the centrally occurring racing drivers. In "Split / Second" can stipulate that, for example, one is crushed by a ship ridden. It will be exciting to see where such racing game-game Crossovers develop – especially in the face of Games like Just Cause 2, where combat inserts have to be completed in driving cars, the war game will be conferring the racing game already from the other side. It may only be a matter of time until you can use the autobombus in racing plays as a strategic element.
