With increasing prosperity, industrially processed food is also committed to former developing courses. The global food companies play an unhealthy role

Chips, Cola, alcohol and cigarettes have several similarities. They are to produce high profits with great profits, in contrast to fresh products have long durability periods and achieve stable selling prices. Coca Cola, for example, achieved with soft drinks a profit of a quarter of the gross – higher margins can still be pressed from Apple computers and alcoholic with alcoholic. It is therefore not surprising that the global food giants are always instructed to expand their clientele.

However, their products, rich in salt, sugar and fat, together with tobacco and alcoholic have a small drawback: harmful pleasure damages the health. Meanwhile, unhealthy diet is worldwide – and no longer only in the industrialists of the West – the main cause of non-contagious chronic diseases. The consequences of chips and cola have thus solved the lower food as the most important disease cause. Where are the causes of Dafur? Taste the Indian and African children suddenly flatbread and do not tea anymore?

Epidemiologists have been examining the phanomenautically for some time and have made a variety of reasons for that. To do this, for example, urbanization. In Mumbai or Nairobi, access to fresh food has become unevenly more expensive for the most of the middle class. At the same time, the remaining farmers no longer succeed in setting their products directly: they have to give up their business (and strengthen the urbanization trend) or are included in the process chain of industrial food production.

Interestingly, the consumption of unhealthy food does not necessarily increase with the income: statistics show that even the poorest of the poor are affected – because the prices of processed foods are partly under which fresh food. On clean drinking water is heavier in some countries than "clean" cola.

In the Open Access Magazine PLOS Medicine now analyzes an international research team with the help of official market data from Euromonitor from 80 states, as the consumption of unhealthy food has developed worldwide over the past 15 years. The researchers extracted six observations from this:

  1. During the west of the consumption of the considered products has hardly increased lately, a high growth is characterized for Lander with low or medium average income. This also applies to alcohol and tobacco – the trend continues, India, China Co reached CO in four decades European level.
  2. The increase in the consumption of unhealthy food is in the "poor" Lermen significantly higher than he has ever completed in the industrialists: Here is a real catch-up hunting.
  3. Multinational food companies have already achieved medium income in the countries medium income as in the West. In China, Nestle belongs to the top 3 companies in the industry in all these countries.
  4. The consumption of tobacco and alcohol has multiplied parallel. Where smokes and drunk, you are also chips and "Cereal".
  5. The growth of the consumption of unhealthy food is not necessarily bound to the prosperity: in countries like Sweden or Sudkorea, he is not gross than in the clearly poor Brazil.
  6. The countries with the highest share of foreign direct investments also have the highest consumption of industrially produced food. Above all, the last point, the researchers mean, indicates the influence of global food companies.
