The heritage of me

Twenty years ago, the first crew of the most important space station to date entered their service

Contrary to the hitherto practice, the Soviet television was live in the same way as in the afternoon of the 13th. Marz 1986 A Soy’s rocket with the cosmonauts Leonid Kizim and Vladimir Solowevi lifted. It was finally a special event: The first crew started to the new room station me, which had been brought into the orbit three weeks before. It is still today, almost five years after its targeted crash, the most successful space station remained – as a result of long-term planning as well as short-term improvisation.

15 years earlier, the Soviet Union with Saljut-1 had brought the first room station in the orbit. Six other versions were followed, the experiences gained had the design of me. In the coming years, the core module was supplemented by five more modules and thus to the first multi-modal orbital station in which one could "get correct", as the German Astronau Ulf Merbold once said.

In fact, the last Saljut station, Saljut-7, was still in orbit when I was put into operation. Both stations were about 3 at this time.000 kilometers apart from each other. After Kizim and Solowev had commissioned me, they climbed their soy spaceship and flew back to Saljut-7 at the beginning of May. There they ended important experiments and, among other things, watched the weather events in the region at Chernobyl, where on the 26th. April had a serious nuclear reactor accident occurred. Then they grabbed as much equipment as possible in the soy and flew back to me, which was now only 1000 kilometers away.

It was the first transfer between two orbital stations ever undertaken. "The ease with which he was completed clearly, demonstrating how much the transport system was matured," writes David M. Harland in his book "The Story of Space Station me". In small steps, the technology was gradually improved. The American Space Shuttle may be more futuristic appearance and coarse loads can transport, but the soy, not least because of this evolutionary approach, has still remained the reliable spatial transport system today.

Something about 15 years should remain in operation until they are on 23. Marz 2001 deliberately brought crash and sunk in the Pacific. 88 cosmonauts and astronauts had housed them at this time and helped to compare an invariable experience of experience on long-term stays in weightlessness.

The heritage of me

Everything did not always ran as smoothly as at the first mission of Kizim and Solowev. The heaviest accident occurred on the 24. June 1997, when a supply vessel came to control while docking and collided with me. A module became leaking, the connecting hatch to him had to be closed. But that did not work without separating out important power cables. Only after several hours the on-board control system could be reactivated. And even afterwards it remained uncertain for weeks if the station did not have to be abandoned.

Such crisis situations and their watering describes Harland as well as the research allarbe of the various crews in the Erdorbit. This detailed pleasure makes the reacture over long stretches some zah. Thanks to a detailed index and a glossary, however, information can be found specifically. Although the book is not necessarily suitable as a developing holiday enrollment, but nevertheless contributes to the fact that an immensely successful episode of space travel is not so fast forgotten.

The end of me

I showed me where a space program could also lead in small steps when it is directed by a clear idea. In this case, it was about to build a permanent prasence in space and gain experience with long-term stays. The preparation of manned missions to the moon, Mars or other goals beyond the earth’s orbit.

This clear objective is initially lost in the International Space Station (ISS). That may be the most important reason why they have not yet proved to be a gold successor. Although NASA has explained to complete the ISS. But confidence in such explanations is sustainably pushed in the light of NASA’s programming decisions in recent years and persistent technical problems with the shuttle. Only the coming years will show whether it succeeds in cultivating in international cooperation to the rich heir of Soviet space travel and lifting the Prasence of man in all to a new level. It’s worth it.
