They come softly and with less observance, but in the next few years, high probability become a mass phanomena. Mildhybride are a comparatively favorable possibility to reduce consumption. Now you should suspect that from the point of view of the target audience, this goal may not have the top prioritat when you move a BMW X5 or X6 into the closer choice. But for the manufacturers, it’s about much, because the penalties for too high fleet consumption are hearty.

So it hardly surprises that BMW is about his diesel strategy. This year, the fleet consumption should fall by a fiveft, such as BMW boss Oliver Zipse on Wednesday (12. February 2020) betrayed. Success should be done with a series of plug-in hybrids, but also mild hybrids as now in X5 40D and X6 40D. Both finish only at first glance a cheek in the assortment that was previously present between 30d and M50D. But the 400-hp diesel with his four turbochargers was allowed to disappear this year – also in the BMW M550D (test). Performance-oriented diesel customers have to do for the art with the 40d.

This offers 250 kW (340 hp) and 700 nm, which should accelerate both SUVs from the stand to Tempo 100 in 5.5 seconds. The 60 hp stronger M50D was only 0.3 seconds faster in this discipline, which should be cope with. The new suggests the old one in consumption – at least in the cycle. BMW determines consumption in the WLTP and then expects the NEFZ back. The X5 M50D is indicated in this scenario with 6.9 liters, the X5 40D with 5.9 to 6.4 liters.

The mild hybridization is not there, of course, to help the 340-horsepower diesel on the fame – with 8 kW, which the 48 volt starter generator nominally maximally contributed, that’s hardly significant possible. As always, the actual goal is a load point shift to operate the internal combustion engine often in the optimum possible. If the current load request is made under this ideal, a small battery is charged, it is removed from the memory. Toyota makes this very successful for many years, but relies on stronger E-engines. The advantage of a mild hybrid is obvious. For a lane effect, battery and electric motor can be designed very small, which keeps the cost and thus the extra charge.

The base of the 40D is well known: the series six-cylinder with three liters displacement is working with a maximum injection prere of 2700 bar. The injection amount can be split to up to ten subsets. New here is a prere sensor in the piezo injector, which should make a "particularly pracisize dosage". The charge is two-stage. The exhaust aftertreatment extends BMW. The engine-related SCR-KAT has been added to another, the nitric oxide values were only under the detection limit.

The prices for BMW X5 40D and X6 40D does not yet call BMW, but a start date. From May, the first vehicles should be delivered with this diesel. Who does not want to make friends with the fully format, may hope: The 340-horsepower diesel was allowed to be offered very soon in the 3er and in the overworked 5er. Both have their premiere probably around the Geneva Motor Show 2020.
