Can save us the transition to vegetarian meals before climate change? A researcher warns of false conclusions

Paul McCartney had a mission as he was on 3. In December last year before the EU Parliament: He wanted to convince the people’s representatives of their part to his "Less Meat – Less Heat"-Campaign. Anyone who exchanges for vegetarian freshness is to make a significant contribution to climate protection: the livestock husbandry, the farm farming, which is fed by,, at a time, 18 percent contributes to the global greenhouse gas emissions (a report of the World Watch Institute published in 2009 even with 51 percent at). That after the ex-Beatle also the chairman of the IPCC, Rajendra Pachauri, the lectern, was allowed, however, doubt doubts were allowed to cause Pachauri at the beginning of the year because of a misleading forecast for melting the Himalayas glacier in the IPCC report in the criticism.

For the often cited 18 percent, which is intended to contribute global animal husbandry to the Klimagas outshift, but is not the IPCC the source, but a 2006 report under the title "Livestock’s Long Shadow" by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the UN published report. In his collapse, this tragic sentence is found:

The Livestock Sector IS A Major Player, Responsible for 18 Percent of Greenhouse Gas Emissions Measured in CO2E (Carbon Dioxide Equivalents). This is a high Share Than Transport.

No other place in the report will be discussed further on this calculation. The agricultural scientist Frank Maulehner from the University of California-Davis has noticed that, therefore, he has recalculated and presented his own version at the Annual Meeting of the American Chemical Society.

Compared to apple with pears

The problem is, according to Maulehner, in the way of calculation. For the share of useful retention, it has apparently not left a single factor – from the recovery of the pet food on the "exhaust gases" of the animals to the emissions occurring when processing the food. In the comparison number, the transport system, on the other hand, only the CO2 outset caused by the fuel consumption have taken considered. Therefore, they have clearly compared apple with pears.

In its own analysis, which raises comparable data. Therefore, with other numbers, the transport industry contributes 26 percent to greenhouse gas emissions in the USA, the rawing of pigs and cattle for food production only three percent. Nevertheless, the researcher admits that animal husbandry is quite a serious CO2 Sunder – only it does not come to less, but clever agriculture.

Efficient: Reduction of the energy consumption of the transport industry

For example, it is extremely important for the carbon dioxide balance sheet in which way and how far our food is transported. A noble fish transported by Hamburg to Munchchen can be more harm to the climate as a hearty pork roast from the farm next door – provided that was not transported in the new SUV in the new SUV from the countryside in the new SUV in the city villa. In the ratio between industrial and developing landlines, Marshoehner sees a special responsibility of the West to propagate more efficient methods of meat and milk production. In the industrialists themselves, however, it is in the interest of the climate more efficient to reduce the energy consumption of the transport industry.

Cattle with processed food or otherwise (about human diet) better usable cereals to feed instead of with grass that only these animals can recycled at all, a further uniformity is currently being applied. Cattle, which is fed with alforne and flaxseed instead of corn and soybean meal, also gives a five-hand less methane – with consistent milk quality, as experiments in the US state of Vermont yielded.
